Alan was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in February 2025. His research project used radio-style documentary productions to explore the ways in which we might investigate and interpret the music cultural practices of the past and explore how we can make radio documentary a developed and sophisticated research method in itself.

From 2008 to 2020, he produced and presented the weekly jazz radio programs for both Black Country Radio and 102.5 The Bridge.

In 2017, he was a tutor on Talking Heads, a Midlands3Cities media event providing training on radio interviewing technique.

In 2018, he recorded, edited, and produced a 60-minute audio soundwalk for an AHRC Research Network event, hosted by Cheltenham Jazz Festival, in collaboration with BBC Radio 3 presenter Fiona Talkington.
